Symbolism
Arms
The dragons, a feature of the flag of Wales, allude to Mr. Vaughan’s Welsh heritage. The lightning flash symbolizes his trade as a power lineman and his profession as an electrical technologist. The water wheel evokes the electrical power generated by the Niagara Falls, close to his residence. The blue represents the waters of the Niagara River and the Great Lakes, which have been an important part of his life, and the red and white symbolize his pride in Canada.
Crest
The white cross alludes to Mr. Vaughan’s faith as a Roman Catholic. The wheat sheaf alludes to the family business, the Vaughan Seed Company in Vaughan Centre in the Regional Municipality of Niagara. The maple leaf coronet symbolizes Canada.
Motto
This Latin phrase means “Opportunity through persistence”.
