Symbolism
Arms
The blue horizontal stripe is a difference applied to the full arms of the chief of Clan MacFarlane to indicate Mr. MacFarlane’s descent from a previous chief. It represents the ocean, while the two anchors, symbolizing hope, evoke his grandfather and father, and their service in the naval forces of Great Britain and Canada.
Crest
The Crest is similar to that of the chief of Clan MacFarlane, in which a man holds a sword and is pointing to a royal crown. His attitude evokes the motto of the clan chief, “This I’ll defend.” The anchor represents Mr. MacFarlane, and repeats the idea of hope.
Motto
This phrase alludes to the anchors in the arms and crest.
