The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The crosses, book and pulpits refer to Dr. Ward’s profession as a clergyman,evangelist and scholar of the New Testament. The cross-crosslets also appear in the arms of Wycliffe College, Toronto, where he held the position of Professor of New Testament.
Crest
The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The padlock and key make a pun on Dr. Ward’s name, “ward” meaning “guardian,” but also being a part of the security mechanism of both the lock and the key.
Motto
This Latin phrase meaning “Safety in faith.” makes reference both to the Crest and to Dr. Ward's calling as a clergyman."
