Symbolism
Arms
Red and gold is a colour combination associated with Chinese culture and thus alludes to Mr. Louie’s ancestry. The Chinese and western dragons, along with the division of the shield, symbolize the balance of Chinese and western cultures in his life.
Crest
The lion makes reference to those in the crests of British Columbia and of the Crown Colony of Hong Kong, the latter being the place of origin of Mr. Louie’s wife, Belinda. The bauhinia flower is the floral emblem of Hong Kong, while the antique crown appears on the provincial flag and arms of British Columbia. Moreover, it is also present in the arms of Simon Fraser University, of which Mr. Louie was Chancellor. Finally, the maple leaves symbolize Mr. Louie’s Canadian identity, as well as his two sons.
Motto
This French phrase, meaning “I am ready,” refers to Mr. Louie’s readiness to serve his community and family. It is a variant on the motto of Simon Fraser University, Nous sommes prêts (“We are ready”).
