The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The grenade is the symbol of the Canadian Grenadier Guards, Major-General Phelan’s regiment, while blue and red are the regimental colours. The saltire, the shape of the cross of St. Andrew, possibly refers to his residence in St. Andrews East, Quebec.
