Arms
The white and gold quarters with eagles’ heads refer to the arms used by the English Pitman family since the early 1500s. The pouches symbolize Mr. Pitman’s success as a fundraiser. For him, the cross alludes to his role as a philanthropist, and the flowery extensions to the benefits that flow in many directions from his philanthropy.
Crest
A martlet on a shell is the traditional crest for the Pitman family from Devonshire. The Loyalist military coronet represents Mr. Pitman’s descent from the Loyalist John Bayley Williston of New Brunswick.
Motto
This Latin phrase meaning “By acting bravely” is the traditional Pitman family motto.
