A ship, a hand holding a dagger, a cross and the blue and yellow colours are all features commonly found in the arms of Scottish persons bearing the name Gillespie, a sept of the clan Macpherson. The border is a Scottish method of differencing to indicate that Mr. Gillespie was from a cadet line of the family.

A wildcat is a common feature of Macpherson crests.
