Symbolism
Arms
Red and white allude to the flag of St. George, the patron saint of England, thus honouring Mr. Hedges’ country of ancestry. The vertical red band represents the journey that Mr. Hedges’ family undertook to migrate to Canada, while the horizontal band at the top represents the many possibilities that opened up to them in their adopted country. Described since Antiquity as a guardian of treasure, the griffin’s protective nature is a nod to Mr. Hedges’ work as a professional accountant and management consultant, both of which involve protecting the information and wealth of clients.
Crest
The rose evokes Mr. Hedges’ ancestry and place of birth, as it is the national flower of England, and the wild rose is the provincial flower of Alberta. The Luckenbooth brooch, with its two intertwined hearts, signifies love and loyalty, and alludes to Mr. Hedges’ more than twenty years of volunteerism with the Canadian Forces Liaison Council.
