Symbolism
Arms
Red is the colour which is used for the Canadian Army, in which Lieutenant-Colonel Nehring served, and to which the swords also refer. The shell is inspired by the badge of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, of which he was the commanding officer. The flames represent the light of learning and knowledge, as well as his passion for his service and for lecturing and writing about military history. They also represent his three children.
Crest
A horseshoe is often found in arms of other Nehring families. It also alludes to the Golden Horseshoe region in Ontario where Mr. Nehring has lived most of his adult life. The wings are often found in German crests, symbolizing Mr. Nehring’s heritage. Green and gold are colours of both Strathcona High School in Edmonton, Alberta, and the University of Alberta, of which he is a graduate. The coronet of maple leaves alludes to Mr. Nehring’s service to Canada.
Motto
This Latin phrase, meaning “Truth prevails,” was the original motto of the 44th Lincoln and Welland Regiment.
