Symbolism

Arms

Three lions’ heads are commonly found in the arms of persons bearing the Scottish surname Buchan. These arms, with a change of colours and the addition of the horizontal band, were granted to Lord Tweedsmuir’s father, the Rev. John Buchan, by Lord Lyon King of Arms in 1895.

Crest

A sunflower is commonly found in the arms of persons bearing the Scottish surname Buchan. This crest was granted to Lord Tweedsmuir’s father in 1896, replacing a different crest that had been granted with the arms the year before.

Supporters

The stag refers to Lord Tweedsmuir’s interest in field sports such as hunting and to his Scottish heritage. The falcon alludes to the interest his son John, who would succeed to the title, had in falconry. The thistles allude to Lord Tweedsmuir’s Scottish origins.

Motto

This Latin expression means “I have not followed inferior things.” It is the motto of the chief of Clan Buchan.
