Symbolism
Arms
The design, including the sun and oak leaves, is that of the arms of Charles Robertson Maier, Lieutenant-Commander (LCdr) Maier’s father. Blue is taken from the arms of his maternal grandfather, Walter Lenard Wright. For LCdr Maier, the sun represents his search for truth and knowledge and his studies in philosophy. It refers to Plato’s Republic, in which the Greek philosopher uses the sun to explain the idea of the good in the Analogy of the Sun and that of truth in the Allegory of the Cave. The anchor refers to LCdr Maier’s career as a naval officer and to his passion for sailing. The oak leaves represent the Garry oak, a unique species found on Vancouver Island, where his home is located.
Crest
The anchor and oak leaves repeat the symbolism of the Arms. The maple leaves indicate LCdr Maier’s Canadian citizenship. For him, the wolf represents leadership and deliberation. The Eastern crown is taken from the crest of his father’s arms.
