Symbolism

Arms

Green and gold recall the city’s agricultural origins, respectively evoking the growing and harvesting of crops. The white book on a green field is taken from the arms of the University of Saskatchewan, highlighting the connection between the city and its academic seat. The cogwheel and ear of wheat indicate local industries that are predominantly linked with agriculture. The black parallel lines radiating from a hub symbolize the importance of Saskatoon as a railway and distribution centre. The central golden disc (or coin) marks its commercial importance.

Crest

The lion is borrowed from the arms of the province. It holds a sprig of Saskatoon berries, a local fruit whose Cree name gave its name to the city.

Motto

COMMERCE • INDUSTRY • EDUCATION.
