Arms
The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. These Arms are based on those of the chief of the Scottish Clan Hamilton, who holds the titles of Duke of Hamilton and Earl of Arran. The three white five-petalled flowers on a red background are taken from the arms of the Dukes of Hamilton, while a black ship on a white background is used by the Earls of Arran. The maple leaf denotes that Lieutenant-Colonel Hamilton is Canadian. The three horizontal bars possibly allude to the rank insignia of a lieutenant-colonel.
Crest
The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. This crest is based on that of the chief of the Clan Hamilton, which consists of an oak tree, a saw and a ducal coronet. The oak is replaced here by a maple tree, alluding to LCol Hamilton’s Canadian nationality.
Motto
This is a variation of the motto of the chief of the Clan Hamilton, “Through,” with an allusion to the ship in the Arms.
