The design is adapted from the arms of the chief of the Scottish Clan MacLennan. The border, with its stars and crowns, is a Scottish method of differencing.

Crest

The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The man in armour holding a flag might allude to Clan MacLennan’s role as standard bearers to the chief of Clan Mackenzie and to the fact that the MacLennan soldiers were all killed after they refused to retreat during the Battle of Auldearn in Scotland in 1645.
