The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. A black shield with a yellow band and lozenges is common for Scottish persons bearing the surname Mitchell. To make these arms unique, the lozenges are black and placed on the band. The border is a Scottish method of differencing.

Motto
The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. This Latin verb means “I have trusted.” It is likely a reference to the last line of the Te Deum prayer, “O Lord, in thee have I trusted,” thus expressing Mr. Mitchell’s faith.
