Symbolism
Arms
Blue represents the Chivers family’s longstanding association with bodies of water. Gold symbolizes the idea of excellence, a value that is dear to Mr. Chivers. The brickwork pattern alludes to his grandfather’s trade as a mason, as well as the family’s commitment to community building in the Edmonton region over more than a century. The concentric circles represent the expansion of Mr. Chivers’ family in North America after his ancestors immigrated from Scotland and England. On a personal level, they evoke the ripple effect Mr. Chivers’ work and volunteerism has had on his broader community. Together with the diagonal stripe running through each ring, they embody a sense of interconnectedness as well as the many paths that one can take in life.
Crest
The goat is a canting reference to the surname Chivers, which derives from the French word chèvre, meaning “goat,” while the holly is a canting reference to the likely meaning of his first name in Scottish Gaelic. The quill speaks to Mr. Chivers’ passion for writing and his belief in the power of the written word. More broadly, it evokes his background in, and deep affection for, the fine arts. The wheat and the wild roses represent Alberta, where Mr. Chivers’ family has lived for over a century.
Motto
This Latin expression means “Always progressing.” It encapsulates the essence of resilience, progress and optimism.
