The composition evokes a multi-panelled stained-glass window. The multiplicity of these panels symbolizes Ms. Carbonneau’s many responsibilities as registrar of the Supreme Court of Canada. The joining together of several pieces into a coherent whole further alludes to the idea of collaborative work and to Ms. Carbonneau’s desire to make justice accessible to as many people as possible. Valued for the effect they create when sunlight passes through them, the stained-glass windows here embody the idea of justice radiating across Canada, as well as the positivity and optimism present in all aspects of Ms. Carbonneau’s life.
Crest
The dog represents Ms. Carbonneau’s love of animals, and in particular her own pet. Dogs are known for their loyalty, joy and energy, qualities she seeks to instill in her life. Associated with the detective Sherlock Holmes, the deerstalker alludes to her ability to solve complex puzzles. The musical note indicates that music has always been part of Ms. Carbonneau’s life.
Motto
These French words, meaning “Justice inspires,” evoke Ms. Carbonneau’s fervent desire for justice to be served and to inspire our actions.
