Symbolism
Arms
The shamrock refers to Bishop Smith’s maternal Irish ancestry, and the rose to his paternal English ancestry. The wheat and grapes represent the Eucharist, the source and summit of the Christian life. Blue is the colour traditionally associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Motto
FIAT VOLUNTAS TUA, meaning “Thy will be done”, is taken from the Lord’s Prayer.
