Symbolism
Arms
Mr. Petley-Jones’s arms are based on the arms of his father, Commander Evan Petley-Jones, differenced with a border alternating white and black. The arms of Commander Evan Petley-Jones were taken from the arms of his two great-grandfathers, Sir Charles Thomas Jones, Kt., of Montgomery, Powis, Wales, and Charles Carter Petley, Esq. of Riverhead, Kent, England. The shield of the Petleys has been differenced by the lion passant guardant and the Saracen’s head of Jones ancestry. The anchor in the canton is in reference to Commander Petley-Jones’s naval career.
Crest
The crest is based on the Petley arms. The arm in armour, garnished with a snowflake, and grasping a scimitar, symbolizes the family’s military service in Canada since the middle of the eighteenth century.
