Symbolism
Arms
Mrs. Campbell’s ancestral heritage is German, and the arms reflect her mother’s family, the surname of which is Nobbe. The bay leaf, botanically known as Laurus noblis, is a heraldic pun on the name “Nobbe”. The maple leaves represent the better home the family desired and for which they came to Canada to find. The red and white are the colours of the arms of her mother’s ancestral German home of Halberstadt as well as of Canada.
Crest
The buffalo’s head emerging from a maple leaf coronet recalls Mrs. Campbell’s birthplace, Winnipeg. The black, red and white allude to the colours of the imperial German flag, which flew above the birthplace of her mother and maternal grandparents.
Motto
This translates as “May the laurels flourish.”
