This is a banner form of the Arms assigned by the Court of the Lord Lyon King of Arms on 26 September 1967 and registered at the Canadian Heraldic Authority on 9 May 1991. The green cross was chosen as the badge of the Order of St. Lazarus c. 1157 by the Master General, Raymond du Puy, green being the traditional colour for hospital services and the cross an indication of the Crusader origins of the Order. The arms of the worldwide Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem consist of the green cross on a white shield, and various national organizations have been assigned this shield with the addition of a national symbol in the upper left, Canada’s being the red maple leaf.
