Symbolism

Arms

The spurs are a reference to the name Ryder (i.e., rider). They also relate directly to the motto.

Crest

The dragon, in a number of forms and positions, is frequently used as a crest in association with the ancestral names Ryder and Rider. The lamp of learning is an allusion to Mr. Ryder's long service with McMaster University.

Motto

This phrase translates as "Fidelity is my spur", and is a reference to the arms.
