Symbolism

Arms

The colours were chosen by Commissioner Hansen and the crosses are an indication of her Christian faith. The four smaller crosses represent her four daughters.

Crest

The sail and mast are a reference to the Viking heritage of Whitby, England, the home of Commissioner Hansen’s paternal grandfather, and the ulu is an important symbol of the Inuvialut way of life. Taken together, they represent the union of two cultures in her father’s family.

Supporters

The lions and roses were chosen by Commissioner Hansen. The snow represents the great northern landscape.

Motto

This expression of determination is also the motto of Commissioner Hansen’s birthplace, Aklavik.
