Symbolism

Arms

Green is the dominant colour in the Davidson tartan and therefore alludes to family heritage. The three shells allude to the three members of Vice-Admiral Davidson’s immediate family. The scallop was chosen as a reference to the sea and to Nova Scotia, and the chevron “embowed” resembles a wave.

Crest

The naval coronet is a traditional heraldic symbol associated with senior naval officers. The lion symbolizes strength and determination, while the maple leaves represent both service to Canada and the three gold maple leaves forming part of the insignia of the rank of Vice-Admiral in the Canadian Navy.

Supporters

The two griffins represent versatility, and the mayflowers are the official floral emblem of Nova Scotia.

Motto

REVEREOR PRAETERITA PARO FUTURA refers to Vice-Admiral Davidson’s convictions that one should “Respect the past; prepare for the future”.
