Symbolism
Arms
Mr. Christopher’s role as an officer of the Senate is indicated by the red stripe, symbolic of the Senate chamber, and by the doors of the Senate, which allude to his role as its “doorkeeper”. Blue and white are the colours of Nova Scotia, and the wavy division line refers to his thirty-year naval career. The Celtic crosses allude to the Irish and Scottish ancestry of his father’s and his mother’s families respectively. The rose is found throughout Cape Breton, and here it represents Mr. Christopher’s wife.
Crest
The bald eagle, native to the Bras d’Or region of Cape Breton, is a symbol particularly cherished by Mr. Christopher. The naval coronet is another indication of his naval career. The Black Rod is an indication of Mr. Christopher’s service as Usher of the Black Rod.
Motto
Meaning “Service, integrity, honour”, these ideas have been valued by Mr. Christopher throughout his life and refer to public service, giving to others and honourable conduct.
