Symbolism

Arms

The wreath of artichoke leaves, based on Dr. Batts’s mother’s family emblem that she has used for several years, represents her mother’s Asian heritage and her own work as an artist. Her poetry is represented by the quill pen, while the paintbrush symbolizes her accomplishments as a painter.

Crest

The wavy bands symbolize the ocean near Dr. Batts’s residence. The coronet of fish refers to Pisces, her astrological sign. Her favourite animal is the cat, whose wings here are an allusion to bat wings and hence to her name. The flute refers to Dr. Batts’s love of music.

Motto

Meaning “True unto yourself”.
