Symbolism
Arms
The green shield and the cross of St. George in chief are based on the arms of the province of Manitoba. The snake entwining the torch makes a reference to the rod of Aesculapius, a medical symbol. The torch and the open book are both symbols of education.
Crest
The bison is taken from the provincial arms.
Motto
This Latin phrase, meaning “Let there be light” (Gen. 1:3), refers to the torch in the Arms.
