Arms
Blue and yellow are the colours of Sweden, Mr. Jonson’s ancestral land, and Alberta, where he has lived all his life. The great horned owl is the crest of the University of Alberta, from which Mr. Jonson has two degrees and a graduate diploma. It was also chosen as the provincial bird of Alberta by the province’s schoolchildren in 1977, when Mr. Jonson was president of the Alberta Teachers’ Association. As the owl is traditionally associated with wisdom and learning, it also serves as a reference to Mr. Jonson’s career as a teacher and a high school principal, and to his tenure as Minister of Education for Alberta. The boar is indicative of strength and courage, and also alludes to Mr. Jonson’s humble beginnings and childhood spent on a farm, where his parents kept pigs.
Crest
The traditional heraldic “talbot” hound indicates that dogs have always been a major part of the Jonson family life. The wild rose is the floral emblem of Alberta, a further reference to Mr. Jonson’s service to the province.
Motto
Meaning “Unwavering in action, calm in manner”.
