Symbolism

Arms

The pastoral staff and key are symbols of episcopal authority. The book alludes to the Bible. The blue background, pastoral staff, key and book are likely inspired by the arms of the Diocese of Montréal and of the Diocese of Toronto. The sprig of three maple leaves is taken from the arms of Ontario. The celestial crown is associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary, and thus alludes to the see city of the diocese, Sault Ste. Marie.
