Normally, Bishop Howe will place above his shield a mitre, the traditional hat of a bishop. His heirs will instead use the crest, usually placed on top of a helmet with mantling. The crest combines two of the important symbols from the arms, with the trillium cross in saltire to reflect the division line of the arms.
