Symbolism
Arms
The wavy bands represent the waterway of the Rideau Canal upon which the village was founded. The blockhouse is significant for its utility as a defence structure for the canal’s three locks. Both the Georgian mill and the mill race wheel are symbols of the extensive milling activity of the village, which became an important industrial centre as a result of the canal construction.
Crest
The mural crown represents the fortification of the village which functioned both as a stronghold for local militia and as a defence for the growing community. The lion, which holds a stone mason’s hammer, represents the original builders of Merrickville.
Supporters
The deer/fish supporters represent both the animals of the land and the creatures of the water, which are so abundant in and around the village. They also symbolize the men and women pioneers who helped build the community. The coronets represent the United Empire Loyalists who were some of the earliest pioneers to settle in the area. The outcrops of fractured limestone form the foundation of the village. The wavy lines represent the surrounding water which the families depend on for generating power, food and transportation.
Motto
The Latin phrase meaning “By the water we flourish” is a statement of the continued health and wealth of the Village of Merrickville-Wolford.
