The sword alludes to his service as an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, which he does by commission from the Crown.

The compass rose alludes to Mr. Coupal’s accomplishments in the academic field of international cooperation. Together, the sea-dragon and compass rose represent the commonwealth’s duty to carry the interests of the international community.
