Symbolism

Arms

Blue and white are the colours of the university. The open book indicates that this is an institute of higher education, and the upside-down canoe represents the name of the location of the university, Oshawa (meaning portage or carrying place). It also alludes to the idea of intellectual exploration. The division line represents energy, innovation and community.

Crest

The falcon represents leadership and persistence, and the thunderbolt emphasizes the importance of technology. By facing the viewer, the falcon represents seeing the world as it is and looking for ways to make a difference.

Supporters

The horses symbolize Windfield Farms, located directly to the north of the university, and which are famed for breeding champion race-horses. They are also an official symbol of Canada and represent excellence, energy and agility. The trillium flowers refer to Ontario.

Motto

This Latin phrase, meaning “By thinking and doing we shall lead”, was adopted by the university in 2003.
