Symbolism
Arms
The upper portion of the shield and the four wavy horizontal bands represent the sea, specifically a ford, or gué in French, from which the Duguay family derives its name. The four bands represent the original four French family lines of the Duguays. The white fleurs-de-lis allude to the fact that the Duguays first settled in Quebec, while the golden star represents their subsequent settlement in Acadia.
Crest
An important avian symbol for the Duguays, the seagull represents the daily marine life of their ancestors. The beech leaves recall the area formerly known as “La Hêtrière”, where the Duguay family first settled in the Acadian Peninsula.
Motto
This Latin phrase, meaning “Your way led over the sea”, is taken from Psalm 76:20 in the Vulgate.
