Symbolism
Arms
The colour blue and the gold lion allude to the arms of the Le Roux family from the Poitou region of France, where Mr. Cardinal’s ancestors originated. François Leroux dit Cardinal, an ancestor of Mr. Cardinal’s, arrived in New France as a soldier with the Régiment de Carignan-Salières. The crown of fleurs-de-lis and maple leaves represent Canada and Quebec, Mr. Cardinal’s home country and province. The oil lamp is a symbol of the nursing profession, which Mr. Cardinal practised for over thirty years.
Crest
The dove and the crown of olive branches represent Mr. Cardinal’s faith and spirituality. He has been a member of the Third Order of the Dominicans since 1965 and preaches love and charity towards others. The heart is another symbol associated with the nursing profession.
Motto
Meaning “Love and charity”, this motto has been used by Mr. Cardinal for many years.
