The black and white bars represent both his father’s long career and pre-eminence in journalism and the family’s ownership of newspapers at various times.

The pearls in the coronet allude to Mr. Perlin’s surname. The seal symbolizes the family’s involvement in the seal industry. The rock refers to the nickname “The Rock” for the island of Newfoundland where the family business was founded. The open and closed rosebuds denote his mother’s role in founding the movement to support the mentally handicapped in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Supporters
The harp seals mark the importance of the seal hunt to Newfoundland and Labrador. The coronet alludes to Mr. Perlin’s role as sometime Canadian Secretary of Her Majesty The Queen. The rock refers to his residence on the island of Newfoundland.
