Symbolism
Arms
The two lions are taken from other Irish O’Donnelly and Donnelly arms. The caduceus was carried by the Greek god Hermes (Mercury in Roman mythology), the protector of merchants, thus indicating Mr. Donnelly’s business career. Green is one of the provincial colours of Ontario, where Mr. Donnelly has lived all his life. It also alludes to Ireland, the home of his paternal ancestors. The ermine fur, being the traditional material of judicial robes, represents justice and therefore Mr. Donnelly’s work as a lawyer.
Crest
The polar bear is a majestic Canadian animal. The enflamed heart is a symbol of charity, and refers in general to Mr. Donnelly’s philanthropic work and in particular to his association with the Terrence Donnelly Heart Centre at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto.
Motto
Meaning “Justice and compassion”, this refers to Mr. Donnelly’s legal training and career, and to his current activities as benefactor to a number of health care institutions.
