Symbolism

Flag

The facing of the flag is coloured red as the traditional colour used in the Senate chamber. The mace, created in 1849, is a symbol of authority in the Senate, and the shield of the Royal Arms of Canada represents the Sovereign of Canada, in whose name the Senate conducts its deliberations. The National Flag of Canada identifies this as a Canadian institution.
