Symbolism

Arms

The oak tree and lymphad appear in the arms of the chief of the Macdonalds of Clanranald, of which the MacEachens are a sept. The polar bear indicates that Mr. MacEachen belongs to the Canadian branch of the family. It wears a crown in reference to the mythical Kingdom of the Saguenay, the Saguenay region of Quebec being the birthplace of Mr. MacEachen and several of his siblings.

Crest

The moose, an animal native to Cape Breton Island, honours the Cape Breton roots of Wilbur Lauchin MacEachen, Ian Lauchin MacEachen’s father. The cross is borrowed from the arms of Macdonald of Clanranald. It is white to suggest aluminum, Wilbur MacEachen having spent most of his career working for the Aluminum Company of Canada.

Motto

This Latin phrase means “By sea”. It alludes to the MacEachen family’s migration from Scotland to Canada, and to the Macdonald of Clanranald motto, “Per mare per terras”, meaning “By sea and by land”.
