Symbolism
Arms
Red and gold were chosen by Dr. Noakes to indicate kindness, generosity and a willingness to share knowledge and experience with others. The unicorn is his favourite mythical animal and symbolizes his Scottish heritage; for Dr. Noakes, it also denotes courage and virtue. The beaver suggests hard work and perseverance, and represents Dr. Noakes’ engineering career. The quill honours his accomplishments as a scholar and as an author of educational materials.
Crest
The salmon honours Dr. Noakes’ contributions to fisheries sciences. The maple leaves represent his two daughters, while the edelweiss, the national flower of Austria, represents his wife’s heritage. The rose recalls his father’s English heritage.
