Symbolism
Arms
The arms combine traditional Scottish symbolism of two family lines from which Mr. Thomson descends: the Thomsons and the Grahams. Thomson arms usually have as the central element a stag’s head on a white background, while Graham arms use gold scallop shells on black. Here the gold and black have been reversed to coordinate with the rest of the shield.
Crest
The crest uses the stag’s head from the arms in a slightly different form. The Martello tower is found in the arms of the City of Kingston, and it thus marks Mr. Thomson’s many contributions to that community.
Motto
This was suggested by Mr. Thomson’s friend, the Hon. John R. Matheson.
