Symbolism
Arms
The blue colour represents the sea and the sky. The white wavy stripes suggest the signal and carrier wave of a radio broadcast, a reference to His Honour’s career in broadcasting, and, more broadly, to communication, one of the pillars of His Honour’s term as Lieutenant Governor. They also evoke the creeks where His Honour, an avid sportsman, has fished for trout throughout his life, also indicated by the trout in the lower half of the shield. The hands suggest cooperation. The millrinds represent His Honour’s wife, whose maiden name is Millar.
Crest
The radio mast pays tribute to His Honour’s broadcasting career, while the trees – recalling the principal charge of the arms of Prince Edward Island – honour his patronage of various cultural and charitable institutions. The oak saplings of the provincial arms are here replaced with horse chestnut saplings, the most prominent tree on His Honour’s family’s ancestral farm.
Supporters
Dogs are among His Honour’s favourite animals, and are symbols of loyalty and service, two themes of His Honour’s term as Lieutenant Governor. His family has had German shepherds as pets over the years. Suspended from their collars is the letter “V”, for volunteerism, and the Roman numeral for five, suggesting His Honour’s five children. Green evokes the verdant fields of Prince Edward Island, and specifically the Lewis family’s ancestral farm in Little York, represented by the white rose of Yorkshire, where the founding families of Little York originated. The compartment also refers to a golf course, with the white discs suggesting golf balls.
Motto
This Latin phrase means "Let us welcome our friends, old and new".
