Symbolism
Arms
The intersecting lines represent lines of transportation and communications, interests of Dr. Cartwright’s. The wheel alludes to the name Cartwright, meaning a maker of carts, and to Dr. Cartwright’s interest in railway history. The squares surrounding the wheel allude to integrated circuits (computer chips), and thus to Dr. Cartwright’s interest in computing. The green and white colours are those of the Order of St. Lazarus, an organization in which he is active. They are also the main colours of Renison University College at the University of Waterloo, of which Dr. Cartwright served as Principal. The green and gold refer to the colours of two of the universities Dr. Cartwright attended, the University of Alberta and Macdonald College at McGill University.
Crest
The beaver is found in the emblem of the Canadian Pacific Railway, of which both Dr. Cartwright’s father and his grandfather were employees. The book alludes to Dr. Cartwright’s academic career, and the letter Psi is the symbol of his particular discipline, psychology. The key refers to the idea of unlocking knowledge, and the cross within it is an emblem of the Order of St. Lazarus.
Motto
This Latin phrase means “Integrity first”.
