Symbolism

Arms

The books represent Mr. McIntyre’s career as founding partner and C.E.O. of Douglas & McIntyre Publishers, and as an advocate for the Canadian publishing sector. Blue and white allude to Mr. McIntyre’s Scottish roots, as they are the colours of the flag of Scotland. The interlaced pattern evokes railways and thus honours his father and grandfather, who worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Crest

The bull, used as supporters in the arms of the Chief of the Clan MacIntyre of Scotland, is the long-time emblem of Douglas & McIntyre Publishers Inc. Its strong and defiant allure characterizes Mr. McIntyre and his entire career. The prairie rose honours his wife, Corky Freedman, who was born in Manitoba and whose family came from Saskatchewan. The maple leaves refer to Mr. McIntyre’s achievements and his pride in Canada.

Motto

This Latin phrase, which means “Through hardship with hope”, is a variation on the motto of the Clan Chief of MacIntyre, “Per ardua”, meaning “Through adversity”, and recalls Mr. McIntyre’s ever-positive outlook on life.
