Symbolism

Arms

The central part of the shield is the coat of arms granted by the Chief Herald of Canada to Mr. Potts von der Lippe in 1991. The three Loyalist military coronets indicate Mr. Potts von der Lippe’s descent from Solomon Austin, a private in the Queen’s Rangers; Jacob de Cou, a soldier with the New Jersey Volunteers; and Willem Vanderlip, a member of Butler’s Rangers, all of whom were United Empire Loyalists who fought during the American Revolutionary War. The addition of the border marks Mr. Potts von der Lippe’s change of name in honour of his grandmother, a descendant of the Loyalist Willem Vanderlip whose name was a variant on the original German spelling of von der Lippe. The red rose on white is indicative of the German region of Lippe, from where the family immigrated to America.
