Symbolism

Arms

The periwinkle flower is the source of several drugs that Dr. James administers to chemotherapy patients in his practice of clinical oncology. The rays allude to radiation therapy.

Crest

The caladrius is a fantastical bird from medieval bestiaries. It is a symbol of healing. When facing forward, the caladrius indicates a patient’s recovery. Combined with the periwinkle flowers taken from the arms, the crest represents Dr. James’s medical career.

Motto

Meaning “I seek fairer skies”, this is the motto, no longer in use, of Dr. James’s school, Pontllanfraith County Grammar School. It appears in a poem by the Welsh poet William Thomas (1832-1878).
