Symbolism
Arms
The horns, a tradition in Van Horne arms since at least the 1500s, are a play on the family name, while the cougar is native to Vancouver Island, Mr. Van Horne’s home.
Crest
The cougar repeats the symbolism of the arms. The hammer and anvil allude to Mr. Van Horne’s grandfather, who owned a portable forge and loved to build things, a trait inherited by Mr. Van Horne. The cougar’s wings allude to the fact that Mr. Van Horne was once a private pilot. The tail is taken from the dolphin emblem of the Canadian Coast Guard, as is the maple leaf, indicative of his past service as an officer. The atom refers to Mr. Van Horne’s work in electronics, as a four-orbit atom is the symbol of this field of study.
Motto
This means “The world awaits you”.
Flag

Badge
The maple leaves pay tribute to Mr. Van Horne’s paternal grandfather, the pioneer of the family in Canada, who was survived by eleven offspring. The horn repeats the symbolism of the arms.
