Symbolism

Arms

Purple and gold are the colours of Mr. Forrester’s university, Wilfrid Laurier University, and purple and white are those of his wife’s university, the University of Western Ontario. The hunting horn, carried by medieval foresters, is found in Scottish Forrester arms, and it makes a reference to his name. The golden retriever is Mr. Forrester’s favourite dog breed.

Crest

The beaver is a symbol of Canada and, as a builder of lodges, also represents Mr. Forrester’s involvement in Freemasonry. The fleur-de-lis represents Mr. Forrester’s service to the world Scouting movement; it is also found in Scottish Morrison arms, an allusion to Mrs. Forrester’s maiden name. She and Mr. Forrester’s mother were both born in Quebec, which is also represented by the fleur-de-lis. The Loyalist military coronet refers to Mr. Forrester’s ancestor Garret Dykeman, who fought for the Crown in the 1st Regiment of the Westchester County Militia during the American Revolutionary War. The fact that the beaver is holding the fleur-de-lis with its left paw indicates that Mr. Forrester is left-handed.

Motto

DISCE • INTELLEGE • SERVI, meaning “Learn, master, serve”.
