Symbolism

Crest

The lion represents the origins in London and Sheffield, England, of the paternal and maternal grandfathers of Mr. Sprules. The anchor represents his family’s relationship with boating: his boat collection, his maternal grandfather’s love of boats, the yacht Limnoseer that his father used to conduct research in Lake Erie on lamprey eels, and the sea captains among his Scottish ancestors. The narwhal tusks allude to the career of his father in international fisheries science with the Canadian government, he having been the Canadian Commissioner for the International Whaling Commission and the Canadian representative at the Law of the Sea conferences. The roses symbolize the English rose gardens created by his paternal grandfather in England and in Hamilton, Ontario.
