Arms
The fired tar barrels represent Mr. Perlin’s descent from two Newfoundland merchant families. The blue areas form parted curtains and represent Mr. Perlin’s life-long interest in the arts and culture of this province. The black and white bars represent both his father’s long career and pre-eminence in journalism and the family’s ownership of newspapers at various times.
Crest
The pearls in the coronet allude to Mr. Perlin’s surname. The seal symbolizes the family’s involvement in the seal industry. The rock refers to the nickname “The Rock” for the island of Newfoundland where the family business was founded. The open and closed rosebuds denote his mother’s role in founding the movement to support the mentally handicapped in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Motto
Meaning “Built upon a rock,” this motto forms a link to the crest and refers to Newfoundland, the “rock”, where the family founded their business.
